Singing voice lessons can be hard on your throat. If you don't prepare, continuous practice on inflection, tone, pitch and volume might wreak havoc on your vocal cords. Worse, if you ignore it all together you might not be able to do what you're supposed to: sing at your recitals. That said, here are some handy tips on keeping your voice smooth, clear, and song-friendly.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Believe it or not, what you eat could affect the way you sing. Consuming acid-forming foods like milk, chocolate and beef could produce excess mucus-making it harder for you to produce high and low notes. Instead, eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. And, before a performance, try to eat a little as chewing relaxes your jaw as well as all the muscles surrounding your larynx. Think of it as a delicious warm-up before practice.

However, if you find your voice phlegmy, don't worry. You can inhale the steam off of a bowl of hot water mixed with balsam oil before your singing voice lessons. Doing this clears your airways, making it easier for you to inhale from your diaphragm and your lungs.

Drink Before You Sing

It's important that your throat isn't dry before you practice. Having a dry throat constricts your voice box, making it hard for you to let out notes. With that in mind, have a sip of hot water with honey before you start your voice lessons. The water keeps your vocal cords warm, while the honey coats your throat and prevents it from being sore.

Also, avoid alcoholic, cold, and milk-based drinks. Alcoholic beverages dehydrate you, making it bad for your mucus membrane (which actually makes up your voice box). Cold drinks, on the other hand, stuns and even stresses your vocal cords. And lastly, milk creates a very thick layer of phlegm which, in the context of singing, will make your voice sound disgusting.
