A morning shower has become a standard routine for most people in UK households. So if you are looking to install a shower in your bathroom, don't worry it is not as difficult or expensive as it may look.
Competition to mixer showers
Showers come in all shapes and sizes, models and capacities, and the first thing to think about is what model will suit the design of your bathroom and also meet the needs of your family home. The standard electric shower is an all-round winner and is available in cutting edge styles to suit any bathroom suite. Power showers add a little bit more by creating a strong jet of water that not only offers a deeper clean and a relaxing and invigorating experience, they are also more controllable through the thermostat technology. No need to worry about being covered in freezing cold water when one of the kids flushes the toilet!
However, Power showers are not for every home. If you have a low pressure water supply in your house then you need to think carefully about how you can increase the pressure. Also because of the intense energy used in a power shower old pipes can be a risk from bursting or cracking.
An overview of a mixer shower
Possibly the cheapest option and probably the easiest to install of the different types of shower is the mixer shower. There are various models of mixer shower, but the most primitive is the type which is just attached to the bath taps. The temperature of the water is controlled by turning - and mixing - the hot and cold tap - very simple to set up, but not a particularly memorable shower experience.
The mixer showers that need special attention as far as installation go are part of the bath water supply system itself. Instead of affixing a rubber hose to the spouts of the taps, the water source for the shower and the bath come from the bath taps. The homeowner determines whether the water is diverted to the shower heads or not by turning a valve on the taps. Mixer showers are less trouble than the power shower to install; they can be used in homes with low or high pressure water supplies. However, like power showers you can also buy models with thermostats which detect great changes in the temperature and fixes the situation.
Mixer showers are available as surface mounted fixtures, where the pipe-work is easily installed on the top of your existing surface, or what is called, flush mounted, where the valve is seen, but the pipe-work is hidden behind the surface. They are then ideal to install in a new shower cubicle construction where the pipes can be built into a wall.
Installing your mixer shower
Fitting this type of shower is pretty straight forward, firstly you need to create two channels in the wall where the shower is going to be installed. In the bathroom at the shower end of the pipes, fit a 90 degree/15mm elbow with a soldered elbow or a compression elbow pipe. Now fix a short piece of pipe of about 100mm long into the elbows. Here comes the inevitable plumbing, so if you are really unsure about your skills in this area, always consult a professional plumber beforehand.
First of all, before you do anything - as with any plumbing tasks - turn off the water at the mains and check there is no pressure or water left in the pipes by turning on the taps. Now we need to Plumb into the hot and cold supply pipes under the bath. This should stop the hot and cold water supply. Cut into the pipes and using an equal tee fit the shower pipes to the hot and cold supplies.
The next step is to fix the brackets and secure the bar mixer to the bracket. The latter will also need to be screwed into the shower arm. Use a spirit level to ensure the riser pipe is parallel to the wall and finally fix the shower head.
